Known by its spectacular “geo-diversity”, Brasil is part of the group of the main world producers and exporters of ornamental rocks and stone covering, along with China, India, Italy and Turkey. The Brazilian production totals 8 million tons and represents almost 10% of the total world production, including a wide variety of granite, slate, quartz, marble and other natural material. The commercial transactions of the Brazilian rock sector in both domestic and foreign market operate more than US$ 4 billion/ per year. Brazilian rock exports amounted to US$ 1.093 billion in 2007, with sales registered for more than 120 countries in all continents. In the world market ranking, Brasil leaped from the 12th position in 1999 to the 5th position in 2006, increasing its share from 1.4% to 5.1%. In 2007, Brasil became the largest supplier of rocks for the demanding American market.
